The best thing that happened this quarter

The redesigned UTA Libraries Online was launched, capping a highly productive and successful inaugural year for WAC.

10 Months In Review

In November 2004, WAC held its first meeting. For the ensuing 10 months, this committee formed into a cohesive and extraordinarily productive group. As a result, the Libraries now have a new web site that has received spontaneous compliments from users and only two complaints (both of which requested that the home page be composed of links to all pages in the site).

The members of the group came together and actively addressed the needs and desires of web site users, keeping the good of the library and the web site in mind. Discussions flowed freely, including disagreements, but the result was concensus, which in turn led to the successfully redesigned web site (using early feedback from users as a measure of success).

WAC addressed philosophical, conceptual, and policy issues related to the library’s web presence, including:

  • The purpose and goals of UTA Libraries Online
  • The composition, message, and image of to be portrayed by the site’s home page
  • The major navigation sections of the site, including the topics and content to be included in each of those sections
  • Selection and definition of new site features (e.g. "Resources for You")
  • Guidelines and policy for upcoming features (e.g. Message Boards)

From this great beginning, I anticipate that WAC will continue its dedication and hard work to further develop UTA Libraries Online. I’d also like to add that I’m personally gratified and proud to have been working with this group of people during this year: standing members Suzanne Beckett, Marie Irwin, Cathy Spitzenberger, Gretchen Trkay, and Jim Wellvang; and at-large members Gerald Alvarez, Barbara Howser, and Josie Murdock.
