Web Advisory Committee Minutes, November 1, 2005

Minutes-taker: Sarah Jones
Attending: Beckett, Suzanne; Irwin, Marie S; Jones, Sarah; King, Burton; Spitzenberger, Cathy; Stepanovich, Mitch; Trkay, Gretchen; Walter, C.D.
Absent: Wellvang, Jim
Guest: Josh Been

Agenda:

  1. Hosting UTA Libraries Online web content on servers other than library.uta.edu or libraries.uta.edu. Specifically, granting exception to web applications developed by GIS for the magellan server. (Been)

The proposal:

GIS-related applications will be developed and hosted on Magellan with the full cooperation of the appropriate DLS staff throughout the entire planning, development, deployment, and post-deployment processes. The appropriate DLS staff will create a stylesheet (template) that will be maintained on the DLS (cheese) servers that will provide these GIS-related applications with a seamless look and feel to the rest of the site. If possible, a new alias for Magellan can be created to further integrate the server into the library web site (http://library.uta.edu/gis/xxxx). Please note that this only refers to web applications such as GeoSpat, Friday Night Hangouts, and the feed aggregator site. This request does not include relatively static web pages that now do exist on DLS' servers. The purpose of this request is to remove impediments to the development of GIS web applications.

Josh Been will attend this WAC meeting to provide additional information.

ACTION:

(Discussion)

With Josh not able to attend today, we will discuss overall policy regarding hosting.

Pros & Cons re: externally hosted UTALO pages

What happens w/ unsupported platform/applications?

Definition of "web content" vs. "application content" ?

Expectations on those who maintain external sites/applications

  • Spelling, navigability, usability, etc
  • Identification w/ UTA Libraries, compatibility with whatever branding there is
  • Headlines, blurbs, labels, usability are under purview of WAC
  • Follow a style guide (to be developed)

Headlines, blurbs, labels = WAC

Application = app developer

Available options:

  • Create a UTA Libraries GIS template to enclose the public pages of GIS applications. UTALO will link to GIS application pages that are in that template.
  • Or, GIS spins off into its own web presence, but the GIS site branding, visual design, look and feel, navigation. UTALO would have an interstitial page. WAC has purview over branding, visual design, look and feel, usability. WAC takes the spinoff proposal to LMT for the final decision

If we spinoff GIS, when is it ok to spinoff and not spinoff?

What are the criteria for spinoff sites?

  • Consult w/ WAC first on the status of the content/goals of the new site/content and the proposal for that content/site/applications
  • Collaborate so that the content/application/content can be most appropriately integrated into the UTA Libraries web presence
  • If this consultation does not happen:

Next Meeting: Tuesday, November 15, 2005, 1:30-3:00, B-29 meeting room

  1. Hosting UTA Libraries Online web content on servers other than library.uta.edu or libraries.uta.edu. Specifically, granting exception to web applications developed by GIS for the magellan server. (Been) -- continued
  2. Draft profile questions for the models pictured in the UTALO home page photos. (Jones)
  3. Offering Google Scholar on UTALO (Irwin)
  4. Jim's comments (sent in email before the meeting): "I don’t know how the discussion on Google Scholar will evolve but if we do make it available I certainly would like to have links to our paid journal titles available. I don't know how that works but it looks as if UT Austin has something going in that direction"
