Web Advisory Committee Minutes, June 13, 2006
Tomorrow's WAC meeting is cancelled, but there is some news to share with you:
- re: the redesigned home page -- Marie is working on this and will have something for us at our next meeting (Tues, June 27th -- so we are planning on meeting that day, barring unforeseen circumstances)
- re: LIFT -- Marie has heard back from them regarding problems with a text-only version of the Library Catalog
- re: MetaLib (slightly tangental but related) -- a new version of MetaLib (ver. 4) is expected next winter (late 2006/early 2007). Ex Libris says that the technical underpinnings of the MetaLib user interface will be massively redesigned, and the functionality available for "deep linking" will be enhanced ("deep linking" here means having a search box on a regular web page for searching a particular topic).
As a result, the MetaLib Implementation Team is going to propose to LMT that it pause work on the current interface and reconstitute with people who would be involved in active development with the coming version of MetaLib.
This has some impact on the Resources by Subject redesign group. Bob will be learning and documenting the deep linking process, so that we can have targeted search boxes for individual subjects.
Even though extensive changes to the MetaLib user interface are on hold, we will be doing a couple of things while we're waiting for the new version. One is to implement deep-linking subject searches as they may be directed by the Resources by Subject redesign. Another is to make the MetaLib interface look more integrated into the library's web site and to make sure that there is good navigation for people who end up in there (i.e., if we drop 'em in there, we want 'em to know how to get out)
Next Meeting: Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 1:30-3:00 pm, B-29 meeting room
